چکیده

In the classical interval scheduling type of problems, a set of n jobs, characterized by their start and end time, need to be executed by a set of machines, under various constraints. In this paper we study a new variant in which the jobs need to be assigned to at most k identical machines, such that the minimum number of machines that are busy at the same time is maximized. This is relevant in the context of genome sequencing and haplotyping, specifically when a set of DNA reads aligned to a genome needs to be pruned so that no more than k reads overlap, while maintaining as much read coverage as possible across the entire genome. We show that the problem can be solved in time min ( O(n2 log k/ log n), O(nk log k) ) by using max-flows. We also give an O(n log n)-time approximation algorithm with approximation ratio ρ = k bk/2c .

Coverage Aware Battery Regression Curve Node Scheduling in Wireless Sensor Networks

In energy-limited wireless sensor networks (WSN’s), optimized node scheduling is an important technique for maximizing coverage and network lifetime. Existing coverage protocols present periodical, random and conditional node scheduling based on some coverage metrics. However, these scheduling techniques causes the frequent and un-necessary wake-ups of sleeping nodes which would increase the en...

Maximizing the nurses’ preferences in nurse scheduling problem: mathematical modeling and a meta-heuristic algorithm

The nurse scheduling problem (NSP) has received a great amount of attention in recent years. In the NSP, the goal is to assign shifts to the nurses in order to satisfy the hospital’s demand during the planning horizon by considering different objective functions. In this research, we focus on maximizing the nurses’ preferences for working shifts and weekends off by considering several important...

Coverage by directional sensors in randomly deployed wireless sensor networks

We study a novel “coverage by directional sensors” problem with tunable orientations on a set of discrete targets. We propose a Maximum Coverage with Minimum Sensors (MCMS) problem in which coverage in terms of the number of targets to be covered is maximized whereas the number of sensors to be activated is minimized. We present its exact Integer Linear Programming (ILP) formulation and an appr...

Cyclic schedules for r irregularly occurring events

In connection with railway scheduling problems Guldan [6] considered the problem to place Y regular polygons on a circle such that the minimum distance between two neighbouring vertices becomes as large as possible. This corresponds to the situation that trains which arrive in constant intervals at some railway station are scheduled such that the safety interval between two trains is as large a...

Maximizing Network Lifetime under QoS Constraints in Wireless Sensor Networks

In this paper, we study a randomized scheduling algorithm, and analyze the problem of maximizing network lifetime under Quality of Service constraints such as bounded values of detection delay, detection probability, and network coverage intensity in wireless sensor networks. We show that the optimal solutions exist and provide the conditions of the existence of the optimal solutions. KeywordsW...
